Mexican Democracy at a Crossroad


A panel discussion on the 2018 Mexican elections and their consequences

The Mexican elections in 2018 have been historic in their results and consequences for the future of the country and its democracy. The presidential election marks an important turning point for leftists in Latin America: not only did a leftist candidate win, but both chambers of the Congress achieved near gender parity. These results indicate serious changes in the years to come. Besides analyzing the electoral results, the panel will discuss possible consequences of this political transformation, focusing on Mexican-U.S. relations and political representation in the shadow of organized crime and drug trafficking.

Panelists: Edmé Dominguez is senior lecturer at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, and Associate Professor in the area of Peace and Development Studies. Her research deals with regionalization, focusing on NAFTA and its social consequences for Mexico. Other research interests include gender perspectives on free trade, political participation and labour organization in Latin America, especially Mexico.

Jorge Lara Borges is a Mexican political scientist with studies in Mexico, Spain, and Sweden. He is co-director of Ibero-American Institute of Electoral Law (Instituto Iberoamericano de Derecho Electoral), and associated scholar at Institute of Latin American Studies, Stockholm University. He is doing research about political finance, political corruption, political campaigns, institutional reform and political parties.

Mónica Hernández Rejón is a film producer, director and researcher. She studied Latin American Studies and Art History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Cinema Studies at Stockholm University. In all of her work she explores racism, identity and representation from an intersectional perspective. She is the founder and director of Stockholm Latin American Film Festival Panoramica.

Moderator: Markus Heide is associate professor at the Swedish Institute for North-American Studies (SINAS) at Uppsala University. His recent research concentrates on Inter-American relations (USA, Canada, Mexico) and the US-Mexico border (history and current situation). In this context he co-edited Hemispheric Encounters: The Early United States in Transnational Perspective (2015) and published contributions on border film, border art, and “narcocorridos” in academic journals in the US and Europe. In 2017 and 2018 he is visiting research fellow at the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS) at UC San Diego where he works on his project on The US-Mexico Borderlands as Contested Space: Film, Art, and Popular Culture (funded by RJ).
