About landgrabbing in Southern Africa

In South Africa, investments on land has led to thousands of farmers losing their land and livelihood. Both Sweden and the EU contributes actively to favor large foreign investors at the expense of small-scale, especially women, farmers' rights to land and seeds. How can we stop this development and what responsibilities do we have in Sweden?

Afrikagrupperna welcomes you to a unique workshop where you through documentary storytelling will take part of stories from the smallholder farmers in northern Mozambique, as several has been, and still are, affected by land grabbing. At the seminar, you will also have the opportunity to listen to Flaida José Macheze, the gender and capacity-building officer on the national farmer organization UNAC of Mozambique. Flaida has worked for more than ten years with female farmers land rights.

LANDGRABBING LEAVE AFRICA WITH TWO EMPTY HANDS

In recent years, over 200 land and seed laws has changed in the 10 African countries that entered into the public-private partnership agreement. The agreements are designed to attract foreign investors by making changes in the laws concerning land and seeds. This do not only make it hard for the individual farmer, but also risks to lead to increased conflicts over land between the local people and investors.

UNAC AND FLAIDA JOSÈ MACHEZE

União Nacional de Camponeses (UNAC), the çnational farmers' organization in Mozambique is one of Afrikagrupperna’s partner organization. UNAC works to raise awareness among small-scale farmers about their rights. They engaged in advocacy, education and counseling. Flaida José Macheze has worked at UNAC for more than ten years. Today Flaida responsible for gender and capacity building and has a great knowledge of land grabbing and female farmers' rights to land.
