Clandestino Talks: Dysturbance


Dysturbance – interruption in the well-ordered ”peacefulness” of the global city. The Friday 4th June session explores different ways to break into the ”normality” of daily-life through artistic intervention and/or activism. Saturday 5th June session talks investigates the more or less violent dispossessions, displacements, and cleansing that today’s urban planning produces as well as the continually arising resistance this generates.

FRIDAY 5 JUNE 17:30

RASHID MUSA: ”YOU HAVE 28 SECONDS TO EVACUATE THIS SQUARE” Rashid Musa organized an action against the bombings in Gaza at Medborgarplatsen (9/8 2014). The event interrupted daily life in Stockholm by bringing the warning message used by the Israeli army announcing imminent bombing to unpreoccupied pedestrians. Rashid will be talking about this action in the Talks first session.

DYSTURB/PIERRE TERDJMAN: ”THE POWER OF PHOTO-JOURNALISM”

Dysturb is a network of photo-journalists driven by the desire to make information freely accessible through the occupation of urban spaces. Pierre Terdjman is one of its founders. During this session Pierre will speak about the collective #dysturb’s photo-gerrilla operations. There are rumors that later this night one of these will take place somewhere in Gothenburg. Keep your eyes open...

CECILIA PARSBERG: STREET-SCREENING

Cecilia Parsberg is an artist living in Stockholm working with an extensive doctoral project on giving and begging. She will show her video installation ”The choir of the giving and the begging” as a street-screening in the fittlingly called ”Public Street” (Allmänna vägen) near Stigbergstorget. (The work lasts aproximately 8 minutes).

SATURDAY 6 JUNE 11.00-12.30 ARTIST TALKS

MAXINE CHIONH: ”INTERVENTION IN A ROOM”

Maxine Chionh is an artist born in Singapore and based in Gothenburg. She will be showing a site-specific and process-based installation at Smedjan exploring what it means to enter an existing place and forcibly intervene in its space.

RICHARD WIDERBERG OCH BARRIE SUTCLIFFE: ”ELECTROMAGNETIC ECOLOGY”

Richard Widerberg och Barrie Sutcliffe are two artists based in Gothenburg. They will show an installation designed for the occasion that produces a remix of allowed media and the invisible and regulated signals we are surrounded by.

SAMIRA ARIADAD: ”THE CITY OF EVENTS”

Samira Ariadad is a freelance journalist, activist and part of the editorial collective Brand. In this session she will discuss how the city is increasingly built after esthetical norms and as an ”event-attraction” for turists rather than to meet the needs of its inhabitants. She will also talk about cleansing disturbant elements to preserve the image of the city that is being marketized and try to give some examples of strategies of resistance against this kind of cleansing.

SARA WESTIN: ”THE NEUROTIC CITY”

Sara Westin lives in Stockholm and is a researcher in human geography at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF), Uppsala University. Drawing on insights from her book The Paradoxes of Planning, as well as on geographer Japhy Wilson’s understanding of neoliberalism as obsessional neurosis, Sara Westin’s presentation revolves around the relation between urban space and the order-seeking mind-set of the ruling elite.
