Gilberto Gil emottog Polarpriset 2005 för att han med stark kulturell övertygelse ”orubbligt sprider den rika brasilianska musiken över världen”. Under sin karriär har han gjort sig känd för en unik spelstil och en eklektisk mix av rock, pop, samba, afrikansk musik och reggae. Han föddes 1942 i kuststaden Salvador i den brasilianska delstaten Bahia och räknas som en av de stora förnyarna av den brasilianska populärmusiken. Under sextiotalet bidrog han starkt till de stora nya strömningarna i brasiliansk musik som gick under namnet tropicalismo.

Gilberto Gil har inte bara turnerat världen över, producerat 60 album som sålt i mer än fyra miljoner exemplar och tilldelats nio Grammypriser – han har också varit Brasiliens kulturminister i fem år (2003–2008) och utnämnts till Artist for Peace av UNESCO 1999 och varit FN-organet FAO:s särskilda ambassadör.

Support: Adriana Calcanhotto Adriana Calcanhotto directed her new show based on her latest album Margem, released in June 2019. Her band includes the same musicians that played and co-produced this latest studio work. Rafael Rocha (mpc, drums, percussion, handsonic, whistle), Bruno Di Lullo (bass and synth) and Bem Gil (guitar and synth).

“During the first rehearsal I looked at the band and said“ let's make this a luau”. That was her first feeling. Luaus depend on the force of the wind, the time it blows in one direction, the tide, and this show is similar; completely dependent on the sea.

During the rehearsals, however, I came to realize that the script's web of texts, which has many echoes and literary references, was superimposed on the idea of ​​a luau, which is at first look is less complex. The marine archetypes were very visible, in my view due they were due to the sound we achieved playing together so long. The sound of the show didn't want to be the same sounds of the recording, the timbre universe had to expand to contain the songs of the trilogy and the sound of the show was more relaxed. It was interesting to note the connections that the songs began to make among themselves regardless of my action. In a way, I was watching the script make itself, an entirely new wayor me to design a show.
