Elena Setién (San Sebastian): Basque multi-instrumentalist Elena Setién's Thrill Jockey debut Another Kind Of Revolution will be released on 15 February 2019. Setién’s declarative gestures both musically and lyrically breathe lifeinto her expressive allegories. Her careful arrangements are direct and affecting, her smooth vocals inviting with their warmth. Setién's creative choices bely her independent spirit and the results are irresistible.

Elena plays nearly every instrument on the album, a testament to her independent spirit. The album's first single, title track "Another Kind Of Revolution," features one of the album's only guest performers, Steve Gunn.

Setién grew up during a period of political upheaval in Spain, in the Basque region. The turmoil of the post-dictatorship period of the 1980s and the intensive civic actions left her with a sense of duty to fight for progress. A brief encounter with Laurie Anderson more recently also profoundly affected Setién. Specifically, Anderson’s parting thoughts on being an artist today: “You just have to make something beautiful and free.” Revolution is, for Setién, going back to simple truths and manifesting the beautiful in people. Her lyrics throughout Another Kind Of Revolution describe the beauty of everyday life, nature, and promote the forces of change not as a burden, but as the very source of hope to draw from.

Liis Ring (Tallin/Göteborg))

Liis Ring har länge sysslat med experimentell underground-pop i DIY-anda. Hon debuterade 2014 med LP:n ”Fables of a Faraway Land”, som släpptes på estniska skivbolaget Õunaviks under pseudonymet cirkl. Albumet gav henne mycket uppmärksamhet i hemlandet, och två kortare turnéer i Europa följde under 2015 och 2016. Medan hon studerade musikproduktion på Musikhögskolan i Göteborg släppte hon under eget namn den drömska och popiga EP:n ”Satori”. I slutet av 2018 utgav hon albumet ”Åker”; hennes mest konceptuella album hittills.

”Åker” utforskar det plats- och rumsspecifika i musikskapandet. Låtarna är inspelade på platserna där de kom till och tidsmässigt så nära inspirationsmomentet som möjligt. I tillägg till traditionella instrument har fältinspelningar, noise och andra ”instrumentifierade” ljud en mycket viktig roll i låtarnas arrangemang. ”Åker” är ett försök att uppmuntra oss till att omvärdera våra vardagsljud och -omgivningar genom att ge dessa en egen röst.
