ArA and Amalia Alvarez present: Cartoons and representation

How is the representativity in the Swedish comic scene of today? Are there any flaws? Is the lack of representativity a problem and if so why?

Amalia Alvarez will do a presentation that will make us reflect on the issue of representativity in comics. By representativity Alvarez means, in this case, mainly the presence of persons with a so called non-western background.

Amalia Alvarez works as a cartoonist in the Mötesplats: Serier-project at Malmö University. The project aims to insert the graphic story in the academic environment. There are three research assistents/comic creators, and Alvarez is working on the theme of anti-racism and representation in comics. The idea is that we as cartoonists show or present our projects to researchers, magisters, teachers, etc., who work in the academic environment. Alvarez does presentations about her antiracist fanzine and two books for those who are interested. What the project wants to obtain is that the researchers, professors, etc., use the comic strips in their work, either as an illustration, or as a reference for the research, and so on.
